Sony's popular Playstation 2 may be seven years old and considered obsolete in the face of next gen graphical powerhouses like Sony's Playstation 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the revolutionary Nintendo Wii, but it seems the little console didn't get the memo.

Update: As of march 2011, the PS2 is still enjoying sales in all major retailers across the world.

Recent sales figures indicate that the PS2 is still outselling current hardware by a wide margin, and as of March 2008, has outsold it's big brother, the PS3, by nearly four million units.

The current global economic climate might have something to do with this phenomenon. People are tightening up their purse strings the world over, and are not so readily willing to hand over their hard earned cash for the latest gaming craze just yet, and since the PS2 has dropped in price considerably since the release of the newer console, it is a more attractive and affordable option. For less than the cost of a PS3 or XBOX 360, you can easily pick up a new PS2 console, which often comes bundled with an additional controller, a memory card, and an least 2 free games. And if you already own a PS2, there is huge back catalog of games available, as well as frequently released new titles, which Sony promises they will continue to develop for at least another two years.

If you're not a tech hound and aren't concerned with high definition graphics or blu-ray playability, then the PS2 is clearly the better option for you. The hardware and peripherals are dirt cheap, and there is a whole library of fantastic games at budget prices available at all leading retail and on-line stores.
